Black Barred Reef Goby

The Black Barred Reef Goby (Priolepis nocturna) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its bold black vertical barring, small size, secretive nature, and ability to thrive in nano reef environments.

Males typically grow slightly larger and may display stronger, more vivid striping, while females/juveniles remain smaller and less intensely patterned.

They reach about 2 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 10 gallons, though larger tanks provide better stability. Provide ample live rock with caves and crevices for hiding, rubble or sandy substrate for comfort, and some open areas for foraging. A secure lid is important, as gobies can jump.

Maintain stable water parameters:

• Salinity: ~1.020–1.025

• Temperature: ~72–79°F

• pH: ~8.1–8.4

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped meaty foods, and high-quality micro pellets. Frequent small feedings are recommended, as this species is shy and often feeds from secure hiding places.
