Black Bar Chromis

The Black Bar Chromis (Chromis retrofasciata) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking coloration, a shimmering blue-green body, and a distinct bold black vertical bar that gives it a unique and eye-catching appearance. This small but vibrant fish displays graceful swimming patterns and adds lively movement to reef tanks.

Males typically exhibit brighter, more intense coloration and a sharper contrast in the black bar, especially during breeding displays. Females and juveniles have a slightly muted body hue with a less pronounced black bar, giving them a softer, subtler appearance.

They reach about 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons to allow ample swimming space. Their environment should include a sandbed, abundant live rock, plenty of hiding spots, and open swimming areas to mimic their natural reef habitat. Stable water parameters are essential, with salinity maintained at ~1.020–1.025, temperature between ~72–79°F (22–26°C), and pH around ~8.1–8.4. A secure lid is important, as they are known to jump.

The diet of the Black Bar Chromis should consist of a mix of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and algae to ensure proper nutrition. With consistent care, this hardy species becomes a stunning and peaceful addition to both reef and community aquariums, bringing vibrant color and gentle motion that enhance any tank display.
