Black Banned Hogfish

Black Banned Hogfish (Bodianus macrourus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bold black vertical banding, elongated body shape, and striking contrast against its reddish to yellowish base coloration.

Males typically develop deeper colors, grow slightly larger, and may display more territorial behavior, while females/juveniles are smaller, with lighter coloration and less intense markings.

They reach about 10–12 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons. Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, caves for shelter, and plenty of open swimming space, along with a secure lid since hogfish can be active and may jump.

pH: 8.1–8.4

Diet should consist of meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, high-quality pellets, and occasional live foods, though they may also pick at small crustaceans in the tank. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to larger aquariums, especially as a centerpiece species due to its size and bold markings.
