Black Axil Chromis

The Black Axil Chromis (Chromis atripectoralis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking iridescent blue-green coloration, the distinctive black spot at the base of its pectoral fins, graceful schooling behavior, and compact size.

 Males typically display brighter, more vibrant coloration during breeding periods, with slightly larger and more colorful fins, while females and juveniles have a softer blue-green hue and less pronounced markings. They reach about 3–4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, with larger tanks preferred for groups. Their ideal habitat includes a sandbed, plenty of live rock, hiding spots, and ample open swimming space to allow for natural schooling behavior.

They require stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid, as they are active swimmers prone to jumping. Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and algae, offered multiple times a day. With proper care, the Black Axil Chromis adds vibrant movement and color to any reef aquarium, making it a standout addition.
