The Bigeye Cardinalfish (Nectamia bandanensis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its large reflective eyes, translucent pink to reddish body, and its nocturnal nature that adds interest to evening viewing. Males typically practice mouthbrooding, holding the fertilized eggs in their mouths until hatching, while females/juveniles share the same body shape and coloration but do not brood eggs. They reach about 3 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.
Provide ample live rock with plenty of hiding spots, as this species is shy and prefers dim lighting or shaded areas during the day. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and ensure a secure lid, as they may jump, especially when startled. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and small marine pellets or frozen foods offered during dusk or evening when they are most active. With proper care, this fish makes a peaceful, visually unique addition to reef or community aquariums.
