Bicolored Dottyback, Coral Sea

The Bicolored Dottyback, Coral Sea (Pictichromis coralensis) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking two-tone coloration featuring a vivid purple front half and bright yellow rear half, compact size, and energetic behavior. Males typically exhibit more vibrant coloration and can be territorial, often defending their chosen territory aggressively, while females and juveniles display slightly muted colors and tend to be less confrontational.

They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide a well-established tank with plenty of live rock, ample hiding spots, and open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around ~1.020-1.025, temperature between ~72-79°F, and pH from ~8.1-8.4. A secure lid is essential, as dottybacks are known jumpers.

Diet should consist of a varied regimen including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium, especially for those seeking vibrant coloration and an active, engaging species.
