Bicolor Parrotfish

The Bicolor Parrotfish (Cetoscarus bicolor) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking juvenile coloration, unique transformation into adult patterns, large size, and distinctive beak-like mouth adapted for grazing on algae.

Males typically develop bold green and orange body patterns with blue highlights and larger, more robust builds, while females and juveniles are white with a bright orange-red head and fins, giving them a completely different appearance.

They reach about 35 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 300 gallons due to their size and active swimming behavior. Provide ample live rock for grazing, open swimming space, and a deep sandbed, along with a secure lid since they can be powerful swimmers and may jump.

Stable water parameters are important: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of a mix of meaty foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, enriched frozen preparations), high-quality pellets, and plenty of marine algae/seaweed to support their grazing needs. With proper care, this fish makes a stunning centerpiece addition to large aquariums, though it is best suited for experienced aquarists due to its size and dietary requirements.
