The Bicolor Anthias (Nemanthias bicolor) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking two-toned coloration — bright orange on the front half and vivid purple on the rear — as well as its graceful swimming and shoaling behavior. Males typically display more intense and contrasting coloration, longer dorsal and caudal fins, and a dominant presence within a group, while females and juveniles are smaller, less vividly colored, and more social in schooling behavior. They reach about 3–4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 70 gallons, ideally in harems with one male and multiple females to replicate their natural social structure.
Provide abundant live rock for shelter and perching, as well as a large open swimming area for midwater schooling. A secure lid is recommended, as anthias are active swimmers and prone to jumping. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, and pH ~8.1–8.4.
Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets or flakes designed for carnivorous marine fish, preferably fed several times per day to accommodate their high metabolism. With proper care, the Bicolor Anthias makes a colorful and dynamic centerpiece for a reef aquarium, adding vibrancy and constant movement to midwater zones.
