Bi-Color Cleaner Wrasse

Bi-Color Cleaner Wrasse (Labroides bicolor) is an absolutely vital addition to any reef display — it not only looks incredible, but plays a critical role in keeping other fish healthy by cleaning off parasites, dead skin, and ectoparasites. With its front half glowing yellow or pale tones and its back half a deep blue or purple, sets up natural “cleaning stations” that draw attention and activity. It’s reef-safe, peaceful, but very specialized, so only experienced aquarists tend to succeed with it long-term. Adult size is about 5-6 inches. Best housed in a well matured, stable reef tank of at least 75 gallons (ideally larger), with abundant live rock for hiding and cleaning station structure, a fine sand bed, stable water conditions (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temperature ~72-78°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a tight fitting lid to prevent escape. Diet is the biggest challenge: in the wild it feeds mostly on parasites, mucus, and dead tissue from other fish. In captivity you must supplement with meaty foods (finely chopped seafood, enriched frozen mysis/brine shrimp), and try to provide natural cleaning “clients” in the tank so the fish can perform its symbiotic behavior. Without sufficient feeding and cleaning opportunities, survival drops dramatically.
