Belted Cardinalfish

The Belted Cardinalfish (Apogon townsendi) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its slender body, translucent silver coloration, and distinct vertical dark belt near the tail base, making it a subtle yet attractive schooling fish. Males typically are mouthbrooders, incubating fertilized eggs in their mouths until they hatch, while females/juveniles share similar coloration but are slightly smaller and do not engage in brooding behavior. They reach about 2.5 to 3 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide ample live rock with hiding spots, as this species is nocturnal and prefers subdued lighting and secure cover during the day. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and use a secure lid as they may jump when startled or during nighttime activity. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped meaty marine foods or high-quality pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a low-maintenance, peaceful addition to reef or community aquariums.
