Bearded Leatherjacket Filefish ([Anacanthus barbatus]).It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its elongated body, distinctive “beard” of bristle-like filaments on the chin, cryptic coloration, and unique leather-like skin texture.

Males typically develop more pronounced bristles (“beard”) under the chin and may show slightly bolder coloration, while females/juveniles display a subtler beard and softer overall markings.They reach about 12–14 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons or larger. Provide ample live rock with hiding spots, sandy substrate, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential, as many filefish species may jump.

Diet should consist of a varied menu including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped seafood, copepods, high-quality marine pellets, and occasional algae-based foods.With proper care, the Bearded Leatherjacket Filefish makes a truly standout and unusual addition to a large, well-maintained aquarium.
