The Beadlet Anemone (Actinia equina) is an invertebrate species that is generally semi-aggressive and considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its vivid red to brown coloration, rounded tentacles tipped with iridescent blue/white beads, and hardy, adaptable nature.
Males typically release sperm into the water column for external fertilization, while females may brood developing larvae internally and later release live young, giving them a unique reproductive strategy among anemones.
Beadlet Anemones reach about 2–3 inches in diameter and should be housed in aquariums of at least 10–20 gallons, though larger systems are more stable. They prefer ample live rock for attachment, shaded hiding crevices, and a stable sandbed to support natural positioning, with moderate to strong water flow.
Maintain stable water parameters: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79 °F, and pH 8.1–8.4. While they do not “jump” like fish, they can detach and move around the tank if conditions are unsuitable, so secure rockwork is essential.
Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood (fish, clam, shrimp), and occasional enriched pellets, though they may also capture small plankton and suspended food particles in a mature reef system.
With proper care, the Beadlet Anemone is a hardy, striking addition to the aquarium, providing both color and natural movement, though placement must be managed carefully to avoid stings to neighboring corals or other anemones.
