Bay Blenny (Hypsoblennius gentilis) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking dark brown body adorned with green and white markings, saddle-like brown patterns, a red spot on the dorsal fin, and unique personality traits.
Males typically develop a pronounced red band on their throats during breeding season and display more vivid coloration, while females/juveniles have a more subdued coloration with less prominent markings.
They reach about 6 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 70 gallons. Provide a sandbed, plenty of live rock, abundant hiding spots, and open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since this species is prone to jumping.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, pellets, algae sheets, and other meaty and plant-based foods, and with proper care this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium.
