The Bay Stingray (Myliobatis californica) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its smooth, flattened body, striking grey-brown coloration with subtle patterning, broad pectoral fins resembling a “bay” shape, and active swimming behavior.
Males typically have slightly smaller disc diameters, narrower tails, and more active exploratory behavior, while females/juveniles are larger-bodied, more docile, and grow steadily over time. They reach about 30–36 inches (disc width) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 500+ gallons, due to their size and swimming needs.
Provide a fine sandbed (to protect their ventral surfaces), minimal live rock arranged to leave open swimming space, and hiding spots or gentle caves for resting. They thrive in stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid is recommended since stingrays can jump when startled.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, chopped seafood (squid, clam, shrimp), and high-quality meaty pellets. With proper care, the Bay Stingray becomes a striking and impressive centerpiece for advanced marine aquariums, requiring dedicated tank management and space.
