Barspot Cardinalfish

The Barspot Cardinalfish (Apogon retrosella) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its subtle silver body, distinctive dark bar or "spot" near the tail base, and small, schooling behavior that adds dynamic movement to reef tanks. Males typically exhibit mouthbrooding behavior, carrying fertilized eggs in their mouths until hatching, while females/juveniles display similar coloration but are slightly smaller and do not participate in brooding. They reach about 2.5 to 3 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, as they are nocturnal and prefer low-light areas during the day. Ensure stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and use a secure lid, as they can be prone to jumping. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped marine foods or high-quality pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a low-maintenance, visually interesting addition to reef and community aquariums.
