The Barred Moray Eel (Echidna polyzona) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution. This eel is admired for its striking black and white banded coloration, which provides excellent camouflage among reef structures. Its elongated, cylindrical body and sharp, pebble-like teeth are distinctive features. Males typically reach up to 28 inches in length, while females may grow slightly larger. Juveniles often display more vibrant and contrasting bands, which may become less distinct as they mature.
Adult Barred Moray Eels require aquariums of at least 75 gallons to accommodate their size and activity levels. The tank should be equipped with a thick sandy substrate, live rock for hiding spots, and a tightly fitting lid, as these eels are known escape artists. Stable water parameters are crucial: salinity should be maintained between 1.020 and 1.025, temperature between 72°F and 79°F, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. They are nocturnal and prefer to hide during the day, emerging at night to hunt. Their diet consists primarily of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and fish, and they may be trained to feed using feeding sticks. With proper care, the Barred Moray Eel can be a captivating addition to a well-maintained marine aquarium.
