Barhead Rabbitfish

Barhead Rabbitfish (Siganus virgatus) is a peaceful species that is completely reef-safe, making it an excellent choice for mixed reef systems as it poses no threat to corals or invertebrates while focusing primarily on algae grazing. This attractive rabbitfish displays a silver-white body with distinctive dark vertical bars running through the head region and eyes, giving it the "barhead" appearance, along with yellow-tinged fins and the characteristic rabbit-like mouth used for constant algae consumption. The clean barring pattern and diligent grazing behavior make it both visually appealing and functionally beneficial for natural algae control. It can reach about 9-10 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 125 gallons or more due to their active swimming nature and need for grazing territory, with plenty of live rock for algae growth, excellent water quality, and consideration for their venomous dorsal spines which require careful handling, though they're generally very peaceful toward tankmates. Its diet should focus heavily on marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed, quality herbivore pellets—with occasional meaty supplements like mysis shrimp, as this primarily herbivorous species requires constant access to plant matter for proper digestion and will help keep nuisance algae under control while maintaining their attractive coloration.
