Banded Serpent Sea Star

The Banded Serpent Sea Star (Ophiocoma sp.) is a peaceful invertebrate admired for its striking banded arms, intricate patterns, and graceful, serpentine movements. Generally reef-safe with caution, it may occasionally interact with delicate corals. Males are usually slightly smaller and more slender, while females and juveniles have rounder central discs and sometimes more vivid coloration.

This species reaches an arm span of 3–6 inches and thrives in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, ideally with a deep sandbed, live rock for hiding, and open swimming space. A secure lid is recommended, as these sea stars can be prone to climbing or jumping. They feed on mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and algae films, making them an engaging and visually striking addition to a well-maintained reef tank.
