The Banded Moray Eel (Gymnothorax rueppelliae) is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking coloration and patterns, featuring a pale grey to greyish-brown body with 16–21 dark bands and a bright yellow head with a distinctive dark spot near the mouth. Males and females share similar appearances, while juveniles often display slightly paler markings. They can reach up to 32 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons. A suitable tank should provide a sandbed, plenty of live rock, numerous hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid, as morays are known to escape. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and small crustaceans, and with proper care, this eel makes a fascinating and standout addition to a marine aquarium.
