Banana Wrasse (Thalassoma lutescens) is a bold, active wrasse that lights up aquariums with its vibrant coloration and nonstop energy. Juveniles are often bright yellow with a black ocellus on the dorsal fin, giving the appearance of a “banana,” while adults mature into dazzling blends of green, blue, and turquoise with radiating facial lines. This species can reach about 12 inches in full size and requires a spacious system of at least 180 gallons or more. Best kept with plenty of open swimming space, ample rockwork for cover, a sandy bottom for natural behavior, strong filtration, and a secure lid since wrasses are jumpers. While striking, this wrasse is semi-aggressive and best suited to larger fish communities in FOWLR systems rather than delicate reef tanks, as it may nip or prey on small inverts. Diet should be highly varied and carnivorous—mysis, krill, clams, shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality frozen foods—to sustain its size and activity level.
