Axil Spot Hogfish

The Axil Spot Hogfish (Bodianus axillaris) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration, bold contrasting black-and-white juvenile pattern, and vibrant red-and-gold adult form.

Males typically develop brighter, more vivid coloration with a distinct axil (spot) near the pectoral fin and show bolder territorial behavior, while females/juveniles exhibit a more subdued or transitional coloration, often with the dramatic black-and-white phase in early life.

They reach about 10–12 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons. Provide ample live rock for hiding and foraging, a sandy substrate, and open swimming space. A secure lid is essential, as hogfish can be strong and determined jumpers.

Stable water parameters are required: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4. Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, copepods, enriched pellets, and occasional algae-based offerings. With proper care, this hardy and active fish makes a standout centerpiece for larger marine aquariums.
