The Australian Mottled Eel (Gymnothorax prionodon) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its distinctive mottled pattern, elongated body, and impressive size. Males typically display slightly larger and more robust bodies, while females and juveniles are smaller with slightly muted patterns. They can reach about 36 inches (3 feet) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons. This species thrives with a setup that provides a deep sandbed, abundant live rock, numerous hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temperature ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4) and a secure lid, as eels are prone to escaping. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small fish, and prepared carnivore pellets. With proper care, the Australian Mottled Eel becomes a fascinating and standout addition to a large marine aquarium.
