Atlantic Blue Tang

Atlantic Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe as it poses no threat to corals or most invertebrates, focusing primarily on algae grazing. This vibrant species displays a brilliant electric blue body that can shift from deep royal blue to lighter powder blue depending on mood and lighting, with distinctive black markings around the eye and a characteristic sharp spine (scalpel) at the base of the tail. Juveniles exhibit bright yellow coloration that gradually transitions to blue as they mature, creating one of the most dramatic color changes in the marine aquarium trade. It can reach about 12 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 125 gallons or more due to their active swimming nature and territorial behavior toward other tangs, with plenty of live rock for grazing, strong water flow, excellent water quality, and consideration for their high oxygen requirements and sensitivity to poor water conditions. Its diet should include a mix of marine algae—nori sheets, spirulina, dried seaweed—as well as high-quality herbivore pellets and occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp, as this primarily herbivorous species requires constant access to algae and plant matter to maintain health and vibrant coloration.
