Arrowhead Soapfish (Belonoperca pylei) is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking arrowhead-shaped pattern, bold black and yellow coloration, and secretive yet predatory behavior. Males typically grow slightly larger and may display more intense coloration, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller and less vibrant in markings. They reach about 5 to 6 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons.
Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, subdued lighting, and minimal tankmates, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid, as some individuals may jump when startled. Diet should consist of carnivorous fare including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and occasionally live feeders, though they can be trained to eat frozen or prepared foods. With proper care, this elusive predator makes a rare and fascinating addition to a species-only or predator-themed aquarium.
