Arabian Butterflyfish

Arabian Butterflyfish (Chaetodon melapterus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking coloration of golden-yellow body contrasted with jet-black fins, bold facial markings, and elegant shape. This species is native to the Arabian Gulf and surrounding Red Sea regions, making it relatively rare in the aquarium trade.

Males typically grow slightly larger, with more vivid coloration and stronger territorial instincts during breeding, while females/juveniles remain smaller and display a slightly paler version of the adult pattern. They reach about 5–6 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons, though larger tanks (100g+) are preferred for long-term success.

Provide ample live rock with hiding crevices, open swimming space, and secure tank covers since this fish can be active and prone to jumping. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4) to ensure proper health.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, chopped seafood, high-quality marine pellets, and occasional algae-based foods. With proper acclimation and care, this vibrant butterflyfish makes a stunning centerpiece species in the marine aquarium.
