Aiptasia Eating Filefish

The Aiptasia Eating Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive marine fish that is considered reef-safe with caution, as while it is admired for its ability to control nuisance Aiptasia anemones, some individuals may nip at soft corals or polyps. This species is valued for its camouflaging coloration, mottled patterns, unique body shape, and fascinating behavior, making it both a functional and ornamental addition to aquariums. Males typically have slightly elongated dorsal fins and may develop subtle courtship coloration, while females and juveniles tend to be rounder in shape with less pronounced fin extensions. Reaching an adult size of about 3.5–4 inches, the Aiptasia Eating Filefish should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, with a setup that includes live rock for grazing and hiding spots, a modest sandbed, and open swimming space. Water quality is essential, with stable parameters of salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4, and tanks should be equipped with a secure lid since these fish may jump. Their diet should consist of a variety of foods including mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, small meaty frozen foods, marine pellets, and occasional algae matter, in addition to their natural tendency to consume Aiptasia. With proper care, this filefish becomes a standout addition to marine aquariums, both for its unique appearance and practical role in pest control.
