African Butterflyfish

African Butterflyfish (Chaetodon dolosus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its distinctive silver-gray body accented with vertical dark bars, delicate finnage, and graceful swimming behavior. This species, native to the coastal reefs of southern Africa, is relatively uncommon in the aquarium trade, making it a prized addition for dedicated hobbyists.

Males typically grow slightly larger and may display stronger territorial behavior during breeding, while females/juveniles remain smaller and often show more subdued coloration. They reach about 7–8 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons to allow sufficient swimming space and stability.

Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding spots, open swimming areas, and a secure lid since butterflyfish can be active swimmers prone to jumping. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4) for optimal health.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets, with some algae-based foods offered to supplement nutrition. With proper care, this butterflyfish makes a rare and striking showcase species in the marine aquarium.
