The African Angelfish (Holacanthus africanus) is a semi-aggressive species that is considered reef-safe with caution, admired for its vivid golden-yellow coloration as juveniles, bold black markings, and strikingly contrasting juvenile and adult patterns. Adult African Angelfish exhibit an olive green color with a lighter bar down the middle of the body, yellow tipped fins, and a stark, black eye-spot behind the gills. Pictured is an adult.

Males typically exhibit larger body size with more pronounced coloration and bolder markings, while females and juveniles often display slightly duller hues with a more noticeable transition pattern as they mature.

They reach about 16 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 220 gallons to accommodate their size and activity level. Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding, a sandy substrate, and plenty of open swimming space. Stable water parameters are crucial: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended, as angelfish may jump when startled.

Their diet should consist of a varied mix of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, high-quality angelfish pellets, spirulina, marine algae, and sponges (a natural component of their wild diet). With proper care, the African Angelfish makes a stunning centerpiece in a large marine aquarium, though it should be kept with compatible tankmates due to its semi-aggressive nature.
