Red Soapfish Grouper

The Red Soapfish Grouper (Suttonia lineata) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking reddish coloration, mottled dark brown patterns, moderate size, and unique secretive behavior. Males typically resemble females in coloration and patterns but are slightly larger, while females and juveniles share the same cryptic appearance and remain smaller. They reach about 14 inches (35 cm) in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons (378 liters). Their environment should include ample live rock, caves, and hiding spots while still providing open swimming space. Stable water parameters are essential, with salinity around 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–78°F (22–26°C), and pH 8.1–8.4, along with a secure lid since this species may jump. Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, blackworms, and other carnivorous preparations. With proper care, the Red Soapfish Grouper adds a fascinating and standout presence to the aquarium, though its secretive nature means it may spend much of its time hiding in crevices.
